ESSENTIAL / UNESSENTIAL WARHOL

September 6 – September 8

September 6-8, 2024

This fall, Greg Pierce – Director of Film and Video at The Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh – pays Anthology a visit, and he’s not coming empty-handed. Thanks to the Museum’s ongoing efforts to restore and digitize the vast and still largely obscure body of 16mm films that Warhol left behind, he’ll be bearing a smorgasbord of treasures: three newly restored and long unavailable features (two of them – PARANOIA [version 1] and THE ANDY WARHOL STORY – screening for the first time in NYC for decades), the famously unfinished BATMAN DRACULA, two half-hour reels from Warhol’s legendary 25-hour-long film, **** (FOUR STARS), and several shorter gems. For Essential Cinema completists, this series offers an especially precious opportunity to see one of the most inaccessible of all the films in Anthology’s foundational collection and screening cycle: reel 75 of **** (FOUR STARS) – entitled “Sausalito” – which we’ve been unable to show since Anthology’s early days.

Greg Pierce will present all five programs in person, with other guests to be announced.

All films in the series are screening from digital restorations courtesy of the Andy Warhol Museum.

This series is presented in conjunction with the exhibition “Looking at Andy Looking”. Taking place at the Museum of Sex, New York, from September 5, 2024 to March 9, 2025, and organized in collaboration with The Andy Warhol Museum, Pittsburgh, the exhibition showcases the early film work of Andy Warhol – SLEEP, BLOW JOB, and COUCH – along with unseen footage from 1963-64, all of which explore themes of intimacy and voyeurism.
