Anthology Film Archives

March 11 – March 27

Since 2011, each annual edition of the Viennale (Vienna International Film Festival) has featured the granting of the ExtraVALUE Film Award to one or more Austrian filmmakers whose films are included within the festival. Designed to showcase the best of Austrian cinema, the Award was founded by Erste Bank, the Viennale’s main sponsor, and is awarded according to the findings of an independent jury. The Award brings a cash prize as well as a residency as a visiting filmmaker hosted and organized by Deutsches Haus at NYU.

Anthology’s longstanding tradition of presenting the Award-winning films was interrupted for the past two years due to the pandemic, but over the coming months we’ll be remedying that, with visits from the filmmakers who received the Awards in 2019, 2020, and 2021! First up, we’ll be hosting the co-winners of the 2020 Award: Georg Tiller & Maéva Ranaïvojaona, who will accompany their film ZAHO ZAY, and Pavel Cuzuioc, who will be here with his feature, PLEASE HOLD THE LINE.

Stay tuned for news of upcoming screenings of the 2021 Award-winning film, Sebastian Meise’s GREAT FREEDOM, and a long overdue visit from Friedl vom Gröller (aka Friedl Kubelka), a co-recipient of the 2019 Award, who will be here in April for an extensive retrospective of her extraordinary body of work.

This program is co-presented by Erste Bank and Deutsches Haus at NYU, with additional support from the Austrian Cultural Forum New York.

Special thanks to the filmmakers, and to Paolo Calamita (Viennale); Juliane Camfield & Sarah Girner (Deutsches Haus at NYU); Ruth Goubran (Erste Bank); and Melina Tsiamos & Nina Monschein (Austrian Cultural Forum New York).
