“THIS IS YOU READING MY DIARY”: COMING-OF-AGE STORIES AND THE STRUGGLE FOR SELF-DETERMINATION
April 13 – June 8
Presented in collaboration with Stony Brook University, “This Is You Reading My Diary” comprises three screening events featuring the work of young filmmakers who have turned the camera onto their peers. Using a broad range of narrative strategies, these films depict their subjects’ everyday attempts to find a place in a world that denies even their most basic demands. Whether challenging gender roles, family expectations, or larger institutions of power, the films’ protagonists must constantly decide what is worth fighting for and what must be let go. Rarely linear, often dissonant, these films reshape the political contours of the coming-of-age story genre.
Organized by Sandrine Canac. This series is made possible by the Art Department and the Graduate Student Organization of Stony Brook University, and the Cultural Services of the French Embassy.
