KEN JACOBS & FAMILY
May 20 – May 22
FILMMAKERS IN PERSON!
We continue our year-long celebration of the work of avant-garde luminary Ken Jacobs (which began in January when we hosted a weekend of Nervous Magic Lantern performances) with three programs of films and videos involving the Jacobs family (nuclear and extended). Jacobs’s body of work stands as one of the richest and most ceaselessly evolving in the history of experimental cinema. That Flo Jacobs has played a vital role in forming this body of work is well-known (and acknowledged most memorably in the extended interview conducted with Flo by critic Amy Taubin in the 2011 book, “Optic Antics: The Cinema of Ken Jacobs”). While Flo’s contributions have largely taken place behind the scenes, she has made occasional appearances onscreen in Ken’s work over the years, in films such as URBAN PEASANTS, THE DAY WAS A SCORCHER, and FLO ROUNDS A CORNER. And this is true too of Nisi and Azazel Jacobs, whose childhoods have been immortalized in NISSAN ARIANA WINDOW, SPAGHETTI AZA, and other films, and who have both gone on to create their own moving-image works as well.
This weekend of screenings will showcase films by Ken Jacobs that depict family and friends in typically stimulating and perception-expanding ways, as well as a program pairing Azazel Jacobs’s feature film, MOMMA’S MAN – which finds Ken & Flo in the unusual position of appearing as actors in a narrative film – with short video works by Nisi Jacobs. In short, this installment of our ongoing Ken Jacobs series will truly be a family affair!
Ken, Flo, and Nisi Jacobs will be here in person!
