THE GLANDSCAPE ARTIST: RUSS MEYER

August 15 – August 25

ALL FILMS SCREENING ON 35MM!

The name Russ Meyer evokes two things, and you know what they are. This August we turn up the heat with an illicit peek at the oversized oeuvre of the indisputable “King of the Nudies”. A noted pin-up photographer and combat cameraman in WWII, Meyer earned his place as an independent film icon with the breakout nudie hit THE IMMORAL MR. TEAS in 1959. From that success he went on to produce, direct, shoot, edit, and write more than 25 delirious films. Meyer was a remarkable cinematographer with a heavily offbeat sense of humor, and his films stand tall over the bulk of grindhouse cinema from that transitional era. Meyer got butts in seats by baring flesh, but his films are often sophisticated satirical statements about sexual identity as much as they are exploitation pictures.

Astonishingly, it’s been many years since the last extensive NYC retrospective devoted to Meyer’s body of work. With Anthology devoting much of August to a Sexploitation festival (itself inspired by the release of Frank Henenlotter’s definitive documentary, THAT’S SEXPLOITATION), the time is, so to speak, ripe.

“Variously dubbed ‘King Leer’, ‘Hollywood primitive’, ‘trash master’, and ‘dirty old man’, this self-proclaimed ‘King of the Nudies’ and ‘glandscape artist’ not only defined the sexploitation genre, he practically invented it.” –Jerry Saltz, VILLAGE VOICE

Special thanks to Janice Cowart (Russ Meyer Trust) and Caitlin Robertson & Joe Reid (20th Century Fox).
