MEREDITH MONK

December 3 – December 5

December 3-5, 2024

Meredith Monk is recognized as one of the most unique and influential artists of our time. A pioneer in what is now called “extended vocal technique”, “interdisciplinary performance”, and “site-specific work”, she has consistently defied categorization. As a celebrated composer, singer, director/choreographer and creator of new opera, music-theater works, films, and installations, her work thrives at the intersection of music and movement, image and object, light and sound.

As part of her 60th Performance Season, Anthology presents a selection of film works by Monk, as well as performances adapted for film, from the 1960s to the present. Many of the films in this program take multiple forms, as standalone installations and as elements in live performance. A true cinephile in her own right, Monk has always drawn inspiration from film, utilizing principles of cinematic syntax (cuts, dissolves, zooms, perspective, time as a fluid element) throughout her artistic practice. Monk weaves together multiple modes of perception into “something more holistic, and more ambitious…a new art form, expressive and corporeal, combining music, dance, and image into a total work of art” (Adam Shatz, NYRB, Nov 2023). This film program showcases her unique ability to bring the vocabulary and vitality of live performance into the cinema space.

Special thanks to Meredith Monk, Sarah Lerner, and Draye Wilson (The House Foundation for the Arts).
