THE FILMS OF THOM ANDERSEN

June 3 – June 12

FILMMAKER IN PERSON!

Alongside our theatrical premiere run of his new film, THE THOUGHTS THAT ONCE WE HAD, we’ll be presenting a comprehensive retrospective of the work of Thom Andersen. Andersen is justly acclaimed for his remarkable feature-length essay films, EADWEARD MUYBRIDGE, ZOOPRAXOGRAPHER; RED HOLLYWOOD; and LOS ANGELES PLAYS ITSELF, in all of which Andersen demonstrates his mastery of the technique of found-footage collage, selecting and organizing excerpts from a dizzying array of moving-image sources to reflect upon and explore ideas about the cinema, photography, history, politics, architecture, and the urban landscape. But Andersen has created work in a much wider range of modes than these three films would suggest, including minimalist short films, a Samuel Beckett adaptation, a structuralist ode to rock-n-roll, a city symphony, and a music video. This retrospective – which includes two brand-new works that will be making their NYC debut – will provide a rare opportunity to survey Andersen’s work in all its diversity.

Special thanks to Thom Andersen; Peter Kelly & Blandine Mercier-McGovern (Cinema Guild); and Ryan Krivoshey (Grasshopper Film), and Sam Ratcliffe (Southern Methodist University).
