MATHIEU AMALRIC: RENAISSANCE MAN

Mathieu Amalric has become one of the emblematic faces of contemporary French (and increasingly international) cinema, thanks to his indelible roles in films by directors as disparate as Arnaud Desplechin, Olivier Assayas, Otar Iosseliani, Roman Polanski, and Alain Resnais (not to mention Steven Spielberg, Wes Anderson, David Cronenberg, and Guy Maddin). That rare actor who combines the cerebral and the physical, who is equally comfortable with nuanced understatement as with bold stylization, and whose choices of projects are as interesting as his individual performances, Amalric has a quality of soul, technique, and taste that would be the envy of any performer.
And yet, his acting career came about by ‘accident’ (when he was recruited by family friend and Georgian auteur Otar Iosseliani to appear in his 1984 French film THE FAVORITES OF THE MOON), and his energies have increasingly been focused on his own filmmaking endeavors. Having already made several short films, he directed his first full-length film, MANGE TA SOUPE, in 1997 and has since completed five more features, including the acclaimed Simenon adaptation, THE BLUE ROOM (2014). Add to that his work in the theater and other live performance, and there’s no question that Amalric is a bona fide “renaissance man.”
Amalric will be visiting New York this fall to appear in the play FIGHT OR FLIGHT (LE MORAL DES MÉNAGES) (adapted and directed by his longtime partner and BLUE ROOM co-star Stéphanie Cléau), at the French Institute/Alliance Française (FIAF) on November 4 & 5. To coincide with this special appearance, FIAF and Anthology have joined forces to co-present an extensive retrospective of his work in front of and behind the camera. Here at Anthology we’ll be focusing on his work as a director, with rare screenings of all six of his feature films and a selection of his shorts, with Amalric in person on October 30 & 31!
