ANIMALS OF ART
by Peter Sempel
2011, 94 minutes, video
This screening is part of: 3 BY PETER SEMPEL
Film Notes(DIE AMEISE DER KUNST)
In his new film, Sempel documents over 50 people from the worlds of music and art, including Jonathan Meese, Daniel Richter, Bazon Brock, Blixa Bargeld, Neo Rauch, Jonas Burgert, Georg Baselitz, Raha Raissna, and others. Conceived of as a “music painting composition”, the film features Einstürzende Neubauten, Yello, Spooky Tooth, Abwärts, Goldene Zitronen, Antony & The Johnsons, and Peter Broetzmann, alongside pieces by Schubert, Mozart, and Bach, not to mention flamenco. The film, inspired by the artist Jonathan Meese, who proclaims the dictatorship of art to the point of self-violation, meanders through various worlds, from the Old Masters (Goya, Manet, Kirchner, and Degas) through to the present day…and features many animals. From Berlin to Art Basel Miami, NY (Bortolami Gallery), Paris, the Everglades, and Yokohama…
