Saturday, September 1 TODAY TOMORROW WEEKEND MONTH

3:30 PM
TEXAS GUINAN SHORTS

This screening is part of: WOMEN OF THE WEST

Film Notes

Texas Guinan may be best known, especially to New Yorkers, for her role in Greenwich Village’s Prohibition-era nightclub scene. As the owner of several notorious clubs, she attracted crowds of people, many of them simply hoping to catch a glimpse of her and hear her trademark catchphrase, “Hello, sucker!” The foundation for this formidable reputation was her impressive career in show business. Coming up in vaudeville, she moved to Hollywood and made a name for herself as an actress in silent Westerns. Known as the “female William S. Hart,” she generally played a tough gunslinger, and eventually even started her own production company, Texas Guinan Productions. Here we present two of her best films, helmed by the great Frank Borzage and John Ford’s elder brother Francis Ford.
