THE LAST FAMILY
by Jan P. Matuszyński
Poland, In Polish with English subtitles, 2016, 123 min, DCP

Film Notes

(OSTATNIA RODZINA)

U.S. THEATRICAL PREMIERE RUN!

With Andrzej Seweryn, Dawid Ogrodnik, Aleksandra Konieczna, and Andrzej Chyra. Special thanks to Ewa Bojanowska (New Europe Film Sales), and Tomek Smolarski (Polish Cultural Institute New York).

The first fictional feature by young Polish filmmaker Jan P. Matuszyński, THE LAST FAMILY heralds the appearance of a major new talent. Based on the life of cult Polish artist Zdzisław Beksiński (1929-2005), whose mild demeanor belied the dark and disturbing surrealism of his post-apocalyptic paintings, the film is – on paper – a biopic. But for those without prior knowledge of Beksiński, you’d never guess it: while based squarely on the facts of the painter’s life, THE LAST FAMILY departs from the usual (and so often stultifying) biopic approach by focusing its attention on the family dynamics between Beksiński and his wife and son, rather than on the artist in isolation, and by adopting a vertiginously unpredictable, often wildly funny tone. Beksiński’s son Tomasz, in particular, becomes every bit as much of a protagonist as his father, thanks largely to the astonishing, compellingly stylized performance of Dawid Ogrodnik. A profoundly neurotic and troubled young man, Tomasz is a figure at once comic and tragic, and his psychological and emotional instability seems to bleed into the texture of the film itself. Veering with little or no warning between behavioral comedy and family melodrama – not to mention between realism and fantasy – THE LAST FAMILY is as deliriously inventive as it is powerful and perceptive.

“Star Seweryn (from numerous Andrzej Wajda films, SCHINDLER’S LIST, etc.) captures Zdzisław’s outward geniality while ineffably conveying something darker brewing inside, something Beksiński himself probably strove to cover except in his art. Ogrodnik has the showier role, moving as if a low-current electric charge was pulsing through his agitated existence; his nervous energy is the flip side of Seweryn’s calm, and the two are grounded by Konieczna’s crucial, emotionally rich equanimity [in the role of Beksiński’s wife, Zofia].” – Jay Weissberg, VARIETY

“Along with Cristi Puiu’s SIERANEVADA, this is as close to a masterpiece as anything I’ve experienced in recent cinema emerging from Eastern and Central Europe. It demands to be seen.” – Michał Oleszczyk, ROGEREBERT.COM
